The Allium family of herbs, which also includes shallots, garlic, onions, and chives, is represented by the plant Allium schoenoprasum (chives). They are indigenous to North America, Europe, and Asia. The smallest species in the onion family, chives have somewhat milder flavor than other Alliums and are characterized by their tall, thin, hollow, bright green scapes. Notably, chives are the only native species of Allium found in both the Old and New Worlds. The French term "cive," which is derived from the Latin word "cepa," which means onion, is where their English name originates.

Since the Middle Ages, people have been growing chives for culinary purposes. There are many different ways to use chives in cooking around the world, including in classic Swedish and French recipes.

Garlic's therapeutic properties are comparable to chives', albeit less potent. They are said to work as a moderate stimulant, diuretic, and antibacterial, as well as having a positive effect on circulation. They are high in calcium, iron, and the vitamins A and C.

Tips for Success

  • With their subtle flavor of onions, chives go well with eggs, cheese, creamy sauces, fish, potatoes, and meat. When preparing hot soups, sauces, and sautés, add the chives right before heating, as prolonged cooking tends to mellow their flavor.

FAQ

How old are these spices?

We purchase what we need every year right after the spices are harvested. These spices are as fresh as you can get. They are not sitting in a warehouse for multiple years. The oldest spices we carry will be one year old compared to the commodity market which warehouses spices for 10+ years before selling them to you.

Are these spices certified organic?

Unfortunately we do not have any certifications at this time but most of our spices are organically grown and all of them are non gmo. Each ingredient can be traced back to its origin. Email support@spicetribe.com for any questions.

Do you have recipes to go with these blends?

Yes! We have an ever expanding recipe library of chef tested recipes. Please shoot us an email if there are any recipes you would like to see at support@spicetribe.com.
